Reading: Ranging the Maine Coast

Ranging the Maine Coast
With a storm rolling into the State we have snow, lots of wind, power outages, coastal flooding and damage not seen around here for 40+ years.
I took this opportunity to finish up Alfred Loomis', Ranging the Maine Coast. Loomis was a writer and editor for Yachting Magazine back in the day! In, Ranging the Maine Coast, Loomis weaves together a tale his Maine coast cruise aboard his cutter Hotspur sometime in the 30's, with coastal history of the European discovery and settlement of the area. Of shipwrecks and explorers first glimpses. For me it is a heart warming familiar tale of coastal cruising from a bygone era. The characters, the communities and the boats are things that have now passed into history, like the first explorers that Loomis connects to in his writing. This pre-WW2 coastal Maine is one that my family has stories of from a similar, rusticator, summer resident, boating crowd background. Fun for me to go back in time with Loomis' writing, to have winter peek back to a time of very different coastal communities and feel.
