Jan 13 Weather Reflection
The storm that arrived mid-week inundated most coastal communities with high water, wave action and 50kt wind. It has destroyed most anything that was not above the high tide mark that day. Buildings flooded or washed away, docks washed away or left unstable, tremendous erosion with roads washed out and seaweed strewn most everywhere. The GSHI dock was spared this time. We were “fortunate” that it was hit last winter and in our spring rebuild project we raised it 2' to account for sea-level rise. Without that additional height ours would have been gone for certain. Instead we are lucky this time and will wait for the next highest tide and wind event to test the engineering prowess of the dock builders.
Sea level is rising. We need to get our heads out of the sand and take action or the sand will be washed from around our heads and we will be late to the new world that we see ourselves in.
